Thank you for your interest in South Orange Amateur Radio Association (SOARA).  Below please find general information about the club, our activities, and membership.

SOARA, a non-profit corporation, was founded in March, 1974 to serve current and prospective licensed radio amateurs in the southern area of Orange County.  The purpose and objectives of SOARA, as stated in the constitution and by laws are:

·    To promote Amateur Radio and advance it's causes.

·    To provide a communications capability and a source of technical support for the benefit of its members and the community

·    To promote fraternalism and cooperation among its members.

To this end, SOARA and the members actively support and participate in ARES, RACES and other sanctioned organizations.  We provide communications support for many public service events throughout the community.

The association is governed by an elected President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and other Board of Directors , each with specific duties and responsibilities.

We hold meetings every month except in December.  These meetings are usually scheduled for the third Monday of each month except when observed holidays conflict.  The meeting schedule is published annually.  Meetings usually have a guest speaker with a radio or communications related topic.  Occasionally, the speaker will be a club member with a particular area of expertise.  The May and November meetings feature a lively auction.  The meeting location is the Mission Viejo Community Center, at the end of Veteran's Way, Mission Viejo. The meeting time starts at 7:00 PM. Visitors and Guests are welcome.

SOARA sponsors Field Day in June, an annual summer picnic, typically in August. and a holiday banquet in December.

The "Propagator", the association newsletter is published monthly and distributed free via email to all members.  It is full of club and member news, as well as technical articles and items of interest to radio amateurs.

SOARA sponsors classes for prospective licensees, and for those licensed amateurs wishing to upgrade.  We also conduct FCC license exams, normally prior to the monthly meetings.  Reservations are required.  Please contact a board member for times and dates .

SOARA maintains repeater stations on the 2-meter, 222 MHz, and 70CM bands. The 2-meter repeater, frequency 147.645 MHz (-), is open to all licensed operators.  The others are limited to use by members, and guests. A board member will provide you with more specific information when you join.  There is also a weekly moderated net held Tuesdays evenings at 8:00 PM on the 2-meter repeater. All checkins are welcome.

To become a SOARA member, download an application here or contact the membership director at the below address. General club questions can be directed to us at soara@soara.org, or come to our monthly meetings. Guests and prospective members are always welcome.
