General Meeting October 21st – Millimeter Wave RF

Please join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, October 21st at 7:00 pm for our General Meeting with out guest speaker Mike Pettus WD6E.

Mike was licensed as WB6VZY General in 1966 during high school. He graduated CSUF 1972 BA Philosophy Science and Mathematics. He upgraded to WD6E extra in 1984 and has been working in the wireless high-tech industry for over 30 years and has earned 15 issued patents. Mike specializes in RF systems engineering with the  last 10 years in millimeter wave systems and techniques.

The night’s presentation will go through a quick background on the fundamentals of RF, with a look at the spectrum from “DC to Daylight”. Then a hunt for TX/RX technologies for the 60 GHz band. How we got involved with IBM and got early access to some cool 60 GHz chips. We’ll dive into the techniques on “how to make it work” at these frequencies and how we evolved designs to work with modern millimeter wave IC packages. He will talk about the development of a 60 GHz “waveguide module” and then show some real applications with products that use these devices for 60 GHz data transmission. He will end the talk in an area of personal interest: millimeter wave radio astronomy.

Ham Radio Examinations will be administered at 6:00 PM, prior to the start of our general meeting. Cost is $15/attempt. Pre-registration is not required and you don’t need to be a SOARA member to take the test.
