Monday, May 18th – General Meeting Online

Dear SOARA Members and Guests,

Join us online via GoToMeeting for our May SOARA Meeting as we welcome back Mike Pettus WD6E.

Mike will be describing the basics of modulation in general, from CW keying, analog modulations AM, FM, digital types FSK, MSK, etc., up through techniques that get us to modern quadrature modulation that’s used in all digital communications today. He will start with how to modulate a radio carrier and end up with QAM technology.  He will also show some recent field tests that have done using 80 GHz carrier frequencies and modulation up to 128 QAM which is how we get to 10 Gbps over the air. If you didn’t hear Mike’s presentation on Millimeter RF, then you should not miss this one.

Because of Social Distancing/Safe at Home practices, our meeting and program will be held virtually via computer using the GoToMeeting platform. This platform will allow a similar format to our typical in-person meeting with introductions, announcements, a presentation with graphics and videos, and an interactive Q & A session. The GoToMeeting platform was selected because it works with computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones, and most important, attendees do not have to download any special software or applications (although, the GoToMeeting “plug in” does work well). An invitation and link will be sent out by Propagator, and email, as well as posted here on the SOARA website below. More detailed instructions will be in the Propagator  and listed in links below. Cameras will be disabled to attendees until Mike has completed his presentation. Due to the technical nature of Mike’s presentation, we do encourage you to ask questions via the chat feature and you will be allowed to ask Mike directly when called on and will open it up to questions at the end as well. We also ask that you keep your microphone muted unless you are speaking. Headset microphones are strongly encouraged as mic/speaker combos on a laptop tend to cause a looped echo.

***GoToMeeting was built to work properly using the Google Chrome browser on a Windows, Apple, or Linux based PC. If you are using Linux and/or a browser other than Google Chrome, you are encouraged to attend one of the Practice Meetings scheduled (see below) to see if your system will work properly with this platform.

NOTE: We will announce at the beginning of Monday’s meeting that we will be recording it to post later for those who could not attend.

***There will be a Practice Meeting available to attend on Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 pm AND Saturday, May 16th at 6:30 pm  for those to want to try it out before Monday or check out their audio settings if it did not work at the previous meeting in April. We will try to keep these to 30 minutes or less.

Ham Radio Examinations will NOT be held this month as the Norman P. Murray Center is closed the end of June. We will announce resuming of testing as soon as we are able.
