August 19th, 2019 – SOARA TECH FAIR

Please join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, August 19th at 7:00 pm for our General Meeting and annual Tech Fair.

The SOARA Fair is held once a year during the August general club meeting where club subject matter experts will hold “mini-seminars” on a range of Amateur Radio and electronic topics.

The mini-seminars are held informally and you can rotate from seminar to seminar.  This event is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.

Bring your pet Tech projects for show and tell sharing with fellow members.  This has proven to be fun and well received in previous years.  Click on Club Fair to see the previous years’ presentations.

Ham Radio Examinations will be administered at 6:00 PM, prior to the start of our general meeting. Cost is $15/attempt. Pre-registration is not required and you don’t need to be a SOARA member to take the test.

July 15th – General Meeting

Robert MacHale (KE6BLR) will be expanding on his Space Communicator presentation delivered at the DX Convention in April 2017. The focus of this presentation is on making contact with the International Space Station by sending and receiving APRS text messages to and from the RS0ISS callsign. We will discuss the basics of tracking satellites in real time with Two Line Elements (TLEs).
He has developed a home brew Az/El rotator with robotics parts from ServoCity and Arduino parts from Adafruit. This project code named “R2D2M2” mounts either the Arrow II antenna or the Elk antenna. These are the two most commonly used portable antennas for 2m/70cm and satellite communications.
Robert also works with Boy Scouts achieving merit badges in Radio, Robotics, and Space Exploration. He is a leading member of Space Communicator Club providing tools for iGates sharing Satellite APRS traffic over the APRS-IS network.

June 17th, 7pm – General Meeting: FIELD DAY 2019 Final Planning and Briefing


It’s that time again to do our final planning for this year’s upcoming Field Day 2019 to take place at Gilleran Park in Mission Viejo on June 22-23. Set up will begin on Friday afternoon and we will need plenty of volunteers to help with setting up the gear, operating during the contest period, and take down and pack on Sunday. This is the clubs’ biggest event of the year and we look to our membership to participate in making this a successful event. As always, non-members are always welcome to attend our General Meeting and see what’s going on in SOARA. We have a lot to cover this evening along with several announcements and would like to start promptly at 7:oopm. Coffee and snacks will be served.

May 20th SOARA Spring Auction

Time to clean out the HAM shack and pick up some new projects for the holidays. All are welcome to attend the SOARA Spring Auction on Monday, May 20th at the Norman P Murray Center in Mission Viejo at 7pm. The SOARA semi-annual auctions benefit the ham community by providing opportunities not otherwise available:

  • New hams get an opportunity to purchase equipment at prices that are a fraction of the cost of new equipment at the retail store. A great way to get into a new hobby.
  • Experienced hams get an opportunity to purchase classic equipment items and accessories for equipment lines that are no longer currently available at retail stores.
  • All hams get an opportunity to purchase supplies and small parts and build up their own stocks of bits and pieces to repair old equipment or build new homebrew goodies (doo-hickeys or what-cha-ma-callits!).

Sellers are encouraged to arrive at 6pm to allow sufficient time for check-ins and tagging of all items prior to the auction. For more information and auction rules and procedures, please check here.
