Our featured speaker will be Kevin Karamanos, WD6DIH. He is the Director of Sales and Marketing at Powerwerx. Kevin is well known in the Southern CA Ham community. He also authors and publishes the well known Southern California Repeater Location Guide.

Jan 22: General Meeting – Science Heads

Join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, 1/22 at 7:00 pm for our next General Meeting.

Richard Stember, Executive Director of the local non-profit organization Science Heads, will be giving a presentation about their High Altitude Balloon / Student Experiment project.  Local Middle and High School students will be designing and building experiments to be carried to ‘near space’ as part of the non-profit’s support for STEM education.  Aboard the payload will be a dedicated 2M APRS transmitter which will provide GPS coordinates and telemetry data.  Richard will also discuss the ways local HAMs can help with this initiative and inspire young minds to dream big.

November 20: Fall Auction

Time to clean out the HAM shack and pick up some new projects for the holidays. All are welcome to attend the SOARA Fall Auction on Monday, November 20 at the Norman P Murray Center in Mission Viejo at 7pm. This semi-annual fun event is great way for SOARA members and other Amateur Radio operators to find and sell ham radio and related equipment.

Sellers are encouraged to arrive at 6pm to allow sufficient time for check-ins and tagging of all items prior to the auction. For more information and auction rules and procedures, please check here.

In addition our regularly scheduled FCC licensing examinations will occur at 6pm prior to the auction.

Greg De Hoogh Appointed SOARA Secretary

At a special Board meeting held on Monday, October 30, the SOARA Board appointed Greg De Hoogh, N6PM as club Secretary to fill out the term of Lambert Matias, KK6WOW.  Lambert resigned because of a business opportunity that required he and Michelle to relocate to the East Coast.  We will miss Lambert and the great contributions he has made to SOARA.

The Board welcomes Greg, who is a longtime ham and SOARA member, to the Board. We are confident he will be able to fulfill the Secretary duties with skill. Our thanks to Greg for stepping forward and throwing his hat into the ring, joining a field of three candidates.

October 16: General Meeting – The DX Engineering Story

Please join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, 10/16 at 7:00 pm for our General Meeting.

This Month’s meeting speaker (via Skype) is Bob Naumann, W5OV, and he will be presenting the DX Engineering story.

Bob is DX Engineering’s Sales Manager. He is responsible for all sales activities and manages the sales and tech support team. Bob has been licensed since 1973. He is well-known in the world-wide contest and DXing communities through many on-air activities. Bob operates from both domestic and DX locations including K3LR and K8AZ. He is an active DXer (DXCC Honor Roll). In addition to contesting & DXing on SSB, CW, and RTTY, he also enjoys VHF weak signal work and HF digital modes. Bob was a member of the CQ Contest Committee for over 20 years. Bob is a life member of ARRL and is also a member of both the Radio Club of America, and the Quarter Century Wireless Association.

September 18: General Meeting – Solar Eclipse, 2017

Join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, 9/18 at 7:00 pm for our next General Meeting.

If you missed the great solar eclipse of 2017, be sure to get a front row seat for this month’s speaker, SOARA member Kriss Larson, KR6ISS. Kriss will present a photographic slide show and describe his trek experience to view the solar eclipse. He will also touch on the radio implications and effects of the eclipse.

Among Kriss’ several radio interests, are the low frequency radio beacons of the past, and those still in existence and on the air, around the world.

August 21: General Meeting – SOARA Tech Fair

Please join us at the Norman P. Murray Center in Mission Viejo, CA on Monday, 8/21 at 7:00 pm for our General Meeting and annual Tech Fair.

The SOARA Fair is held once a year during the August general club meeting where club subject matter experts will hold “mini-seminars” on a range of Amateur Radio and electronic topics.

The mini-seminars are held informally and you can rotate from seminar to seminar.  This event is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.

Bring your pet Tech projects for show and tell sharing with fellow members.  This has proven to be fun and well received in previous years.
