I have a Baofeng UV-5R handheld. I bought it in case of emergencies when leading scout hikes in the wilderness, for use while boating in local waters (mostly between Newport Beach and Catalina), and for a long road trip I take every year that has limited cell coverage. I have programmed "Gordo's Top 60 + Marine For Baofeng UV-5R" into my handheld. While I can hear NOAA weather broadcasts, KNX and KFI and an occasional conversation, I don't seem to hear many conversations. My questions are:
1. How do I use repeaters to extend the range of my radio;
2. How can I increase my ability to hear and join in conversations;
3. What is the best way to use my handheld to communicate when far from populated areas.

As you can probably tell, I'm inexperienced and ignorant about ham radio, but I am licensed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Matt
